The Natural Side of Student Voice
The power of student voice never fails to amaze us! This is so inspiring, and the very reason we do what we do at EMC! The Flipgrid team recently had the pleasure of visiting our longtime friend Andy Plemmons (@plemmonsa), Library Media Specialist at David C. Barrow Elementary School, and his awesome students in Athens, Georgia. "There's a level of honesty that comes out from kids, you see more of their natural side ... when they're making a video." – Andy Plemmons.
Thanks for sharing your wonderful students + your experience, Andy! The work you do with your students is inspiring.

School board bringing Spanish, Mandarin Chinese to Quakertown students
Beginning next school year, all Quakertown Community elementary students will be taught Spanish. At its meeting Thursday night, the school board reviewed Spanish language curriculum for first through fifth grade students across the district's six Elementary schools.
"We are working very hard to strengthen our world language department," said Lisa Hoffman, supervisor of curriculum and professional development.
In September, elementary students will have Spanish class one day of the six day academic cycle. Teachers will use the Symtalk program to introduce kids to Spanish. Other Spanish curriculum programs have been problematic for neighboring schools, but the Upper Moreland School District, in Montgomery County, has found success in Symtalk's methods, said Hoffman.
It's a very unique system," Hoffman said.
Elementary School Students Learn Spanish with Symtalk at Upper Moreland Intermediate School
"Upper Moreland School District, which is located in Willow Grove, PA, is doing something quite rare in these days of tight school budgets: adding a world language program at the elementary school level." Part of Upper Moreland’s strategy to motivate students is to get them talking as soon as possible through the use of a program called Symtalk.

Andy Plemmon's Black History Month Project (Year 2)
Andy Plemmons (@plemmonsa), our longtime Flipgrid friend from Barrow Media Center in Athens, Georgia, shared his students Black History Month project again for 2015! We are inspired and honored by the amazing work of his students.
Andy shared on the Barrow Media Center blog that "Our 2nd grade is once again developing a Black History research project. We took some innovative steps last year to connect this project with an authentic audience around the globe. This year, we are trying to add a few new layers. One of the pieces that we weren't happy with last year was the idea of a postage stamp. Students were trying to persuade an audience to vote on whether or not a famous person from Black History should be on the next postage stamp. While we loved the project, we knew that the postage stamp was out of our control and not realistic. This year, we decided to create our own prize that we could award to one of the people from Black History, and we are calling it the Barrow Peace Prize. As part of our project, we will learn about Alfred Nobel and the Nobel Peace Prize. That part of the project will come soon."
Ultimately, Andy's students will reflect on their projects using Flipgrid.

Thanks to Andy and his students for inspiring us by your wonderful work!

"I have one more tool to share. It is Flipgrid.com, and although it isn’t free (sorry!), it isn't expensive either, not for what you get. Flipgrid costs 65$ a year, and for that, I get a great tool to help my students gain confidence with their speaking skills. I post a prompt or question, and students record a video reply. They can view their video before they submit. If they want to, they can re-do their video reply as many times as they like, until they submit the final response.
I have a lot of students who are deathly afraid of speaking in front of an audience. Flipgrid allows them, and the others who are more brave, to submit a speaking assignment, which represents their best work. They are happy because they can do it even on their phone if they want. I am happy because I finally have an EASY tool to use to collect speaking assignments, and assess them on my iPad in that comfy chair I mentioned earlier. SO much more fun than grading those old grammar tests I used to give so very long ago. It may not be free, but it is well worth it to me, especially when I see the results. Priceless!"
