Associate French Editor

Job Summary

The Associate French Editor assists in the production of a successful, profitable series of French language basal and non-basal textbooks, ancillary, electronic and multimedia materials for the high school market by working closely with Editor, Authors, Production, EDP, Marketing, and Sales. The Associate Editor will work together and closely with the Editor to ensure that the programs are released to the market on time according to publishing schedule. The Associate Editor will be responsible for editing, copyediting and proofreading for student textbooks, teacher’s edition, and ancillary materials. In addition, s/he will be responsible for development, design, organization, execution, accuracy, production and advocacy.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Edits and copy edits all the textbooks and ancillary materials as knowledge of language allows or otherwise coordinate with outside editors and copy editors specialized in the respective language. Integrates elements written by various authors into one cogent piece
  • Proofreads textbooks and ancillaries
  • Provides direction to authors on revisions of manuscripts (e.g., supply rewritten samples, or provide detailed instructions on factors to be incorporated in subsequent drafts)
  • Listens to and comments on audio and video products or coordinates proofing of audio and video materials
  • Establishes project goals and objectives by working with Editors to conduct focus groups and questionnaires for educators about the essential and desirable characteristics for a new language program
  • Develops schedules for various components of the program’s various levels
  • Participates in the development of new electronic and multimedia products for the World Language markets
  • Develops and/or writes additional components that Marketing needs to improve language programs or other products, in terms of both print and electronic products
  • Attends national, state, and local conferences to support the sales and marketing efforts
  • Maintains professional expertise in language instruction by talking with teachers and salespeople and attending professional meetings
  • Answer questions in writing or by phone from customers and sales reps
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by World Languages Editor or Editorial Director and work closely with them

Required Education and Experience

  • B.A. or higher in French
  • Proven fluency in the French language (reading, writing, speaking, listening)
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience as an educator in high school in world languages

Desired Qualifications, Knowledge, Abilities and Skills

  • B.A. or higher in Secondary Education
  • Fluency in French at native level
  • Experience in writing, editing, and publishing, preferably textbooks
  • Knowledge of online learning environments and other technology used in education
  • Knowledge of ACTFL and Common Core State Standards
