Approach to Learning
Gradual Release of Responsibility Reading Model
- The text is organized around the gradual release of responsibility reading model.
- This unique reading model from guided to directed to independent enables all students to develop skills leading to independence at their own pace.
Introduction to Genre
- The genre is introduced and defined before students read the unit selections.
- Detailed and extensive explanations of literary elements are followed by two selections that demonstrate the use of these elements.
- Prepares students for understanding the selections that follow.
- Students apply reading skills and strategies.
- Each genre begins with a Reading Model, which introduces students to the before, during, and after reading process.
- Following the Reading Model are three Apply the Model selections that provide students with guidance in learning the before, during, and after reading process.
- These pairings provide opportunities for students to analyze two selections by comparing and contrasting literary elements.
- At least one Comparing Literature pairing per unit appears in the Directed Reading section, followed by Find Meaning, Make Judgments, and Comparing Literature questions.
